"I was just diagnosed with Type 2 and am on Lantus once at night at 10 units. I've noticed my eyesight has degraded since starting this. Is it normal?"

Background Info Hide
Just diagnosed on 12/28/2011. Have gotten my blood sugar to <120. Exercise regularly, no diabetes in the family (this came out of nowhere). I am going to opthlamalogist but noticed a big change in my eyesight. I need reading glasses (didn't need them a week ago!).

Hello dalyc
Thank you for bringing you question to dLife.

You ask if it is normal to have a decrease in visual acuity after initiating Lantus. Well, it is not "normal" however, it is listed as a adverse reaction for Lantus. Lantus lists as a reaction that with the initiation of insulin therapy and the intensification of glucose control can result in a REVERSABLE transitory opthalmologic refraction disorder. In other words, starting insulin, not just Lantus, can worsen your vision for a while but with improved glucose control, you reduce the risk of permanent damage such as diabetic retinopathy.

I commend you on good self-management of your diabetes by seeing your ophthalmologist and by being adherent to your medications. Communicate with both your diabetic provider and your eye specialist about your vision changes. They may be temporary.

I am on 25 units of lantus a night plus 8 units of humalog before meals and my vision is still the same as it was 5 years ago and i was diagnosed 11/5/11. I now have my blood sugar average <115. Of course medication works different on everyone. Just keep doing what you are doing have heard a lot of times once your BS is undercontroll your vision will go back just as long as you keep it undercontrol.
