"I am 69 year old female. Have been on insulin for 6 years. I have developed abdominal drop--can I have surgery, or what can I do?"
Asked By: bilmarsh
Category: Insulin

Background Info Hide
I am on increasing units of both Levemir and Novolog insulin. I am of high/normal weight. Over these insulin years, I find my belly keeps getting bigger and bigger and now I have abdominal drop. My diabetic specialist says that this increased belly fat and abdominal drop is the result of advancing age and increased insulin requirements and how insulin works in the belly, beta cells. Exercise and diet don't seem to matter. The rest of my body, arms, chest, legs and hips are of normal size. Is there anything I can do? Liposuction--is it safe for a diabetic. Maybe a new treatment for diabetic II?

Hello bilmarsh
Thank you for bringing your question to dLife. You ask if you can have surgery to help with abdominal drop and if it is safe for a diabetic to have liposuction. All surgery is a risk for all patients. Surgery for a diabetic holds more risk. Diabetics heal slower and are at higher risk for complications of surgery such as infection. This type of surgery is considered cosmetic and would not be covered by insurance.

I encourage you to continue exercising and maintaining a healthy weight. If you decide that you want to pursue a surgical approach to your abdominal drop, please be sure you understand the risk versus the benefit of any cosmetic procedure.
