Moderate amounts of alcohol (less than 1 drink per day for adult women and less than 2 drinks for adult men) when ingested with food has minimal effects on glucose and or insulin concentrations. However, you must use caution because alcohol may cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels) a few hours or the morning after drinking, especially with the use of diabetes medications such as insulin and insulin secretagogues. Since alcohol is a stimulant to the nervous system, you may notice an increase in heartbeat. I would recommend that you check with your doctor first, and if he/she say it’s ok, make sure you eat something when drinking alcohol and never drink on an empty stomach. People who have severe hyper triglyceridemia (elevated levels of triglycerides in blood), pregnant women, history of alcohol abuse or liver disease, should avoid alcohol altogether.
