Dear bethanne67,

Thank you for writing dLife.

Insulin resistance usually has no symptoms. People with a severe form of insulin resistance may have dark patches of skin, usually on the back of the neck, but these patches can also be observed on the elbows, knees, knuckles and armpits. This condition is known as acanthosis nigricans.

Your background information suggest that you have several risk factors for insulin resistance;

  • Father with diabetes
  • Previously diagnosed with gestational diabetes - during both pregnancies
  • Currently treated for high blood pressure

  • Your health care provider is the best person to determine whether you have insulin resistance or not. Insulin resistance can be assessed by measuring the level of insulin in the blood.

    You may also benefit from a visit with a registered dietitian RD. After careful evaluation and assessment of your history, an RD will develop a meal plan that can facilitate weight loss. Click here to find an RD in your area.

    Good luck!
