"Can I have pre-diabetes and diabetic neuropathy?"
Asked By: jannaj
Category: Neuropathy

Background Info Hide
I was diagnosed as having pre-diabetes. My A1C is 6.1. My fasting blood glucose level is 124. Do I have diabetes or pre-diabetes?One doctor says it's diabetes and the other pre. It's so confusing!!!! I have numbness and tingling down my left leg and it feels as if someone was striking my foot with electricity. I also have a burning sensation and less pain sensation right below my neck but not yet at my shoulder blades. It hurts very bad. I was diagnosed as having a pinched nerve in my spine. Is this all diabetic neuropathy or a pinched nerve? I know it all involves nerves. Thank you.

Hello jannaj
Thank you for bringing your question to dLife, You ask if you have Diabetes or Pre-Diabetes. The American Diabetes Association has guidelines listing the criteria for the diagnosis of diabetes. But remember, these are just numbers that have been established. They are GUIDELINES. You are so close to the criteria that to say you have diabetes or pre-diabetes is really arbitrary. Since you are experiencing a serious complication of diabetes-neuropathy-to be concerned whether you are diabetic or pre-diabetic is wasted effort. Getting your glucose levels in a healthy range should be your goal, not worrying about semantics.

The ADA criteria for the diagnosis of Diabetes are:
Fasting plasma glucose level of equal to or greater than 126mg/dl on two occasions
Random plasma glucose level of equal to or greater than 200mg/dl on two occasions or one one occasion if obvious symptoms of hyperglycemia are present.
Hemoglobin A1c level of equal to or greater than 6.5%.
In the ADA 2011 Guidelines, the condition called pre-diabetes was changed to be called high risk of future diabetes.

Could be both, did you have the nerve pain before you were diagnosed? If so then it was or is from the pinched nerve. I have impingement in both of my shoulder, disc degeneration and also neuropathy of mt legs and feet cause by the diabetes. I am on 900 mg of Neuroton 3 times a day and it relieves the pain.If you have a pain in the part right under your toes that feels like it is on fire I would talk to your dr about seeing a neurologist that can do nerve test.
