"My tongue is burning and has "cracks" in it. Could this be caused by high blood sugar levels?"

Last A1C was 7.6. I'm on Prandin 4mg X3, Byetta 10mg X2, Glumetza 500mg X3, Lisinopril 20mg X1, Protonics 40mg X1. Was diagonosed March 2001. Fasting sugars are rising now in the 160 - 180 range. Any insight would help.

People with diabetes are at risk for developing neuropathy, a condition that may cause symptoms of numbness, burning and tingling. This is associated with high blood glucose levels and can effect all parts of the body. However, high blood glucose is also closely related to periodontal disease, a condition that effects the gums and mouth. When was the last time you visited the dentist? Your best course of action to determine the cause of your symptoms would be to schedule a dental appointment and have your tongue examined. Your dentist will then be able to provide you with information or refer you to another health care provider. Good luck!

Our immune system helps to ward off and fight infection. By slowing the action of white blood cells, high blood glucose levels make it more difficult to prevent and fight infection. You don’t need to call your doctor every time you have a sniffle. But you will probably want to call if certain things happen. For example: you've been sick or have had a fever for a couple of days and aren't getting better you've been vomiting or having diarrhea for more than 6 hours you have moderate to large amounts of ketones in your urine you take pills for your diabetes and your blood sugar level climbs to more than 240 before meals and stays there for more than 24 hours you have symptoms that might signal ketoacidosis or dehydration or some other serious condition (for example, your chest hurts, you are having trouble breathing, your breath smells fruity, or your lips or tongue are dry and cracked) you aren't certain what to do to take care of yourself An oral infection like candidiasis is one real complaint that can cause burning mouth, so are conditions like uncontrolled diabetes, food sensitivities, nutrient deficiencies and a lack of saliva. Improperly fitting dentures or an allergy to the denture material also may produce a burning mouth. Tests such as blood tests, allergy tests, and an oral swab or biopsy, may need to be ordered. So I recommend that you see your doctor to look for the underlying reason for this condition. You might also try avoiding certain irritants, including alcohol-based mouthwashes, products containing cinnamon or mint, cigarette smoke and acidic liquids. Remember that you can reduce the risk of infection by • keeping your blood glucose levels in target range • getting plenty of rest • washing your hands often.

for 15 years my blood sugars averaged 400/day. I fasted to reach 250. My highes would go over a 1000. my A1c was 15, 13 at the lowest. I stopped taking insulin, my appetite decreased overwhelmingly and spiritually found the thought of eating a carcass of an animal to be too carniverous. I eat as Christ asked of us, red wine, no yeast, fish and vegetables along with fruit. No animal should be killed for our LUST?GLUTTONY. Animal in Greek means to have a soul. Those Athenian philosophers along with the truth Christ exemplified saved my Life. I am consistently at 100 and usually I spike for an hour tops after a big, bad meal. Corn syrup immediately comatizes me but I do recoup. Brown sugar and honey in moderation does not effect me the same as Corn syrup. I avoid going above a 200mg/day sodium intake which means no junk food nor canned and processed. Thank God for the nutritional labeling that carter initiated. I avoid eating during the day but sashimi or tofu with raw vegetables will not harm me. My weight is so stable and I never imagined how energetic a 100 sugar count can be. i am living a life I never imagined I could. I never watch T.V. anymore and my brain is very quick. The setbacks are the teeth, tongue, and inability to sleep without medication...i am hyper all the time. The lack of rest does exasperate the tongue sores. I use colgate orabase paste and biotene gel for the saliva action of moistening my oral tissue. Expensive but very effective. Melatonin 9 mg can knock me out for 14 hours combined with valerium, but i prefer xanax 1/2 mg. I am extremely healthy and it took 6 months of no more insulin therapy. I was on so many types 4-6 injections/day over 120 cc
