Hello Ziggy, I have not heard of restrictions on people who have Type 1 Diabetes being police officers, and in fact have worked with patients who have Type 1 and are police officers. If, however, you discover that there are restrictions to work in such an area, it is your “Right” to appeal. Resources are available to you on the American Diabetes Association web site at www.diabetes.org, and you can contact your local authorities in regard to job discrimination. Go for your dreams, and stand up for your rights!

I was diagnosed with Type 1 at age 12 (in 1990). I have been a police officer with a suburban department in Upstate New York for the past 9 years.........so, YES, you can become a police officer with Type 1. My suggestion is to get your Endocrinologist behind you on your career pursuits. Get his or her support. If your Endo doesn't support your career pursuits, find a new Endo who is willing to work with you and stand behind you......this is what I did. In order to get through the pre-employment medical exams, I needed a letter from my doctor indicating that I was in good control. Get on the pump, if you are not already a pump user........I don't know how I could do the job if I were not on the pump. The pump is invaluable and absolutely necessary, if you ask me. Here's the catch.......take care of yourself, test your BG's often, exercise and eat right. Go for it, Ziggy!! Law enforcement is a fantastic career!

I am a type 1 , and I have been an officer for 19 yrs. it would be a violation of your civil rights to use this as a reason not to hire you. Good luck Officer D. Gonzales, State of Oregon
