My a1c last month was 5.5, fasting usually from 69-80, 1 hour after meal 98-120. However if i eat white rice, asian foods or snack bar my blood sugar goes up to 200. Im 5'1 and 105 pounds. I walk and do cardio 2 hours daily. My doctor told me that she does not think that my GD will go away and that i have type 2 diabetes. I just dont get it, i dont fit the diabetes profile at all. Hello, Pregnant women who have never had diabetes before but who have high blood glucose (sugar) levels during pregnancy are said to have gestational diabetes. The placenta supports the baby as it grows. Hormones from the placenta help the baby develop. But these hormones also block the action of the mother's insulin in her body. This problem is called insulin resistance. Insulin resistance makes it hard for the mother's body to use insulin. She may need up to three times as much insulin. There are a very small percentage of women who at a healthy weight for their height develops insulin resistance and diabetes. I agree that you do not fit the profile of someone who would typically have insulin resistance and develop diabetes. With continued regular exercise and healthful eating, you should be able to control your blood glucose. As for the white rice, Asian foods or snack bar that make your blood sugar rise dramatically, portion control would be required. Talk with a registered dietitian about establishing a meal plan. You will learn how to count your carbohydrates, control your portions, read labels, etc. to better manage your blood glucose. Be well.

I had gestational diabetes with all three of my pregnancies and am not overweight and did not eat junk food. I did find out that there is a history of polycystic ovary disease in my family (mother, sister, and cousins). I have been taking just metformin for eight years now and do not have any issues with spikes in my glucose. I do have to be careful what I eat and count carbs to control my fasting glucose. I have not gained weight and do not look like a "typical" diabetic.

Yes I understand you think you dont fit a diabetic profile. What is that exactly do you mean overweight. My mother was diabetic for over 50 yrs and gave birth to 5 children. She was diabetic when I was born and was a type 2 diabetic. She was 5'4" and weighed at or under 100 lbs all her life. She didnt fit any profile at all. It isnt about any profile any longer, there are way to many things that can make us diabetic. If I was you I sure would avoid the foods that you say spike your bs. In those high levels you will start having some body damage. Diabetes is a complicated disease and there are several reasons one might get it.
