Hi there Melianthy - Thanks so much for your question. It's always great when loved ones take an active interest in their special person with diabetes.

The short answer to your question is diabetes does not have to ruin your brother's future. It is up to him, however. You did not say what type he is but either way, good diabetes management is the key to him staying healthy and living long. If he sees his doctors, ask questions when he's unsure, get help with a meal plan tailored to his needs, take whatever meds he is prescribed, exercise, and accept support when needed, there is no reason for him not to live a healthy life and maybe even help others with diabetes once he becomes a doctor. Potential complications are a fact of the diabetes life, so as soon as he thinks something is wrong, he should seek his doctor's advice to help keep complications at bay.

We have loads of examples of people here who are living with diabetes successfully. Check out our video section to see. There are books on the dLife Bookshelf that might help. There is our support forum where either you or he - or both - can go to find others who can commiserate. And of course there is dLifeTV. Check our schedule for show times.

He's blessed to have you to help care for him. How this disease plays out for him, for the most part, lies in his hands.

Good health to you both.

There are lots and lots of people living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes that live a normal life. Will it ruin his life? No, unless he lets it. I have had type 1 since I was 8 years old and I function in a business environment - while it's not in the medical profession I am required to make decisions and respond to immediate situations and have done so successfully for more than 15 years. Is it easy? Nope. But being on an insulin pump has helped me live a more normal life. It has it's ups and downs but it is manageable, go into it with the attitude I have diabetes it doesn't have me. I have bad days but I just have to pick myself up and go on. Good luck to your brother and you should reassure him that you support him.
