"Exactly what factors label a person as being diabetic? What is the "weight" of these diagnostics to each other?"

I exhibit none of the expected symptoms of diabetes, yet carry a higher than normal H1AC avg. I am on insulin and constantly suffer from hypoglycemia. I survived a major bout with abdominal cancer 19 years ago and since then have always had elevated glucose readings. Am I really a diabetic?

Hello, Your question indicates that you are uncertain about your diagnosis of diabetes. And yet, you have a higher A1c and are on diabetes medicines. What symptoms were you expecting to have? According to the American Diabetes Association, type 2 diabetes is diagnosed by a fasting blood glucose (sugar) of 126 mg/dl or higher. Fasting is defined as no caloric intake for at least 8 hours. These criteria are to be confirmed by repeat testing on a different day. Frequent low and high blood glucose indicate that your diabetes treatment plan needs to be evaluated. Talk with your doctor about how to achieve and maintain target blood glucose levels. A registered dietitian can help establish a meal and exercise plan to reflect your current needs. Take care.
