Research done on patients who participated In the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) found that 8% of the participants who had pre-diabetes actually showed evidence of diabetic retinopathy. So it is not uncommon. Research continues to assist in identifying those individuals who are at risk and may be developing some of the complications of diabetes. It is for this reason everyone diagnosed with type 2 diabetes schould be screened for retinopathy and have a yearly dilated eye exam. Early detection of diabetic retinopathy is very important as individuals do not have symptoms and early detection will allow early treatment.
