"How do I determine what is an acceptable daily carb allowance for weight loss?"
Asked By: jimmathews

Background Info Hide
I have recently been diagnosed as borderline Type 2 Diabetic. I have started losing weight on the Weight Watchers Program. I have been following it for 10 weeks now. My A1C has not changed. Prior to starting the diet I had a 6.5 A1C and now 10 weeks later I am still at 6.5 but my practitioner seems to think that I need to limit my carb intake. I have lost 15lbs in 10 weeks. My testosterone level in 45 points below the low normal. Any suggestions?

Dear jimmathews, Thank you for your question. Different physicians have different recommendations regarding carbohydrate intake. It is possible that your doctor is trying to get your A1C down to under 6. If so, you will need to continue to work on weight reduction and increased activity. When I counsel men who are trying to lose weight, my usual carb intake recommendation is usually 50-75 grams of carbohdyrate per meal. I don't know how this compares with what you are doing. A diet like weight watchers gives foods a specific point value but doesn't restrict how you select the foods. You could be eating more grams of carb that I recommended. You could look at their high protein menu samples and see if that would work out for you.
