"I have highs and lows. I was wondering how much liquids, (water, etc) should I be drinking. I am always feeling dry - dry skin, dry eyes, itching? "

I am a type 1( middle age onset) . I am not overweight. I am in my 50's and have a difficult time controlling my sugars. I am on 3 types of insulin and do morning walks.

I commend you in your efforts at daily exercise in the out of doors, and cold winter days are certainly a time when problems with dry skin become apparent. People with diabetes are often prone to dry skin, due to loss of fluid when blood glucose levels are high, as well as poor circulation to the extremities. Drinking plenty of water is most certainly important, and in most cases, the more the better, with 6 to 8 glasses of pure water a day being the average recommendation for maintenance of adequate hydration. People who have kidney damage, problems with fluid retention, congestive heart failure, or other conditions in which fluid intake is restricted should talk with their Doctor for specific recommendations. Avoiding use of carbonated beverages is also helpful as the carbonation can contribute to dehydration. During the winter months, dry skin is often aggravated by exposure to cold outside air, followed by entry into warm heated environments. Things you could try to help prevent and treat dry skin include: Layering clothing so that soft, smooth fabrics touch the skin; removing excess layers while inside to prevent overheating; reducing the frequency of bathing, keeping water temperature warm but not hot; replacing harsh soaps that have deodorants or antibacterial additives with gentle cleansers such as Dove, Oilatum, Cetaphil, or CeraVe; applying a thin layer of bath oil or hydrating cream after bathing; and avoiding use of oils or creams with heavy fragrances. In addition to these, it may help to talk with your eye doctor about things you can use for treatment of dry eyes. Healthy Skin is also an indication of a healthy body, so finding ways of including nutrient rich foods in your diet and practicing the 7 Self Care Behaviors (listed to the left of your screen) is sure to help!
