"I was diagnosed with GD at 28wks pregnant. I am now 30wks and my sugars have been all normal. Does GD go away during pregnancy? "
Asked By: mjhaines

Background Info Hide
I check my sugar 3x a day. Fasting is 72-94 and 2hrs after lunch and diner are always 84-120 which is the range the Dr. told me was fine. When I first started testing my levels were higher (highest at 156 after eating, fasting always 87-98) and now it seems like they are always staying low no matter what I eat. I just checked 2hrs after Thanksgiving dinner (ate everything...lots of carbs and even apple pie) and my level was surprisingly only 119. Does that mean it went away?

Hello, Glad that your blood sugar is within target range. Pregnant women who have never had diabetes before but who have high blood sugar (glucose) levels during pregnancy are said to have gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes starts when your body is not able to make and use all the insulin it needs for pregnancy. Blood sugar usually return to pre-pregnancy range soon after the baby is delivered. It is rare that blood sugars improve during the pregnancy (before delivery) without intensive treatment. I recommend that you resume following your meal plan closely. Be sure to continue with your regular physical activity and blood glucose monitoring schedule. Talk with your doctor about the sudden change in your blood sugar readings. He or she may modify your treatment plan accordingly. Remember that the very steps that will help control your blood sugar level — such as eating healthy foods and exercising regularly — can help relieve stress and nourish your baby. Moms typically have their blood sugar tested at their 6-weeks check up to determine if the blood sugars indeed return to normal. Sometimes Moms actually have undiagnosed diabetes when they were first diagnosed with gestational diabetes.
