"I'm 27 weeks pregnant and I have gestational diabetes. How can I decrease my fasting levels?"
Asked By: shondalette

Background Info Hide
I failed my first glucose fasting test. I decided to go straight to a dietation instead of taking the 3 hour test. My fasting levels range from 75-106. I spoke with a dietitian and she noticed I did not eat a bedtime snack and advise me to do so. I'm doing this, but the problem I'm having is I wake up starving between 3am and 4am since I started this diet plan. I think this is contributing to my high fasting levels. Is there any bedtime snack you can recommend I try before going to bed that will help with this problem?

I am glad that you have discussed your meal planning with a dietitian, she/he is your best resource. A bedtime snack usually contains about 15 grams of carbohydrate along with some protein. If you snack during the middle of the night, your fasting blood sugar is not a true fasting value. if you need to snack at night, try sugar free Jello, it is a good choice when you need something sweet without being detrimental to your blood sugar. If you are following your meal plan and continue to have an elevated fasting blood sugar, you may need medication to help lower your morning values.

Hello, I am really glad that you've seen the dietitian. If you're waking up hungry in the middle of the night and having high BS in the morning, I suggest talking to your dietitian and physician about it. Your dietitian may add 30g of carbs with a protein for your snack depending on your BS levels. Your physician may need to include medication/insulin as part of the treatment. Good luck!
