"I'm a woman embarrassed to say that I'm finding it difficult to get 'turned on' and even when I do, I can't seem to have a full orgasm. Am I alone?"
Asked By: lisa4life

Background Info Hide
I'm now 40 and was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes 6 years ago and my sugars have gotten worse and worse according to my A1C results, though when I test they seem to be the same bad numbers they were: 30 day avg = 180-210. Will my sexual condition reverse itself if I get under control or am I too late? I don't know if I can live w/o fullfilling intimacy. When my husband left me I promised myself to never be in a loveless and sexless relationship again, but now I'm the greatest obstacle and I'm scared. Is there help for me?

Dear Lisa 4 Life, Your user name says a lot about the way you approach life, and it sounds to me as though you already know the source of some of your answers. Living with diabetes takes a toll on our bodies, requiring that we pay close attention to its needs if we are to survive the drain, by giving it the nutrients and care it deserves. I often describe the impact of eating nutrient deficient “junk food” to that of borrowing from our retirement account, as our body requires specific micro nutrients to digest and utilize the food we eat, so when we eat foods which do not contain the necessary nutrients, we must borrow the nutrients from our bodies’ hidden stores. And so it is with health itself, at first it doesn’t matter how well we take care of ourselves because we have hidden reserves, but eventually we bankrupt ourselves and our health begins to crumble. For Women, this time often occurs around the time of menopause, and women with diabetes are prone to experience menopausal symptoms much sooner than our counterparts who do not have diabetes, as hormonal imbalance becomes more apparent. Libido may also be impacted, as Libido itself is an indication of HEALTH. There is Good News, however, as it is NEVER TOO LATE to start taking better care of Yourself! Getting your blood glucose levels under control is an important first step. Talk with your Doctor about things you can do to tighten your control, and you will be amazed at the improvement in health and vitality you will feel. Look at the tab to the left of your screen called “7 Health Care Behaviors” and commit yourself to the development of one healthy habit each month. And last but not least do things for yourself which feed your “Soul” because Diabetes is a Disease which requires that you tend to your Heart. . . And by that I mean your Inner Self. The practice of Mind Body Skills such as Gentle Yoga, Tai Chi, and other forms of Mindful Practice can go a long ways towards development of Soul, which allows you the courage and strength it takes to Live Well with Diabetes. And with care of your body and soul, you can experience the Intimacy you crave. It may not be the same as that of your youth, but it can be much richer and deeper.
