My husband is 23 years old and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes over a year ago. We are concerned that the diabetes it's preventing him from getting me pregnant. Are we being ignorants about it? Or is this a strong possibility?

Dear jesicaviviana : You are not being "ignorant", but - "NO", your husband's diabetes is not a likely cause of infertility. The biggest problem encountered by men with diabetes is erectile dysfunction, which can occur if BG levels remain above target, leading to nerve damage. (A great incentive for tight control). There are many reasons why pregnancy may not occur, ranging anywhere from low testosterone levels (which does tend to be more common in men with diabetes), to underwear which are too tight fitting. My recommendation is for both you and your husband to have complete physicals to rule out any possible causes. Most importantly, relax and enjoy yourselves. For some reason, worrying about getting pregnant seems to make it less likely to happen! Good luck.
