Hi Susie, Unfortunately I don't have enough information to properly answer your question, but these are my thoughts:Two thing I do know and they are that depression can interfere in your diabetes self care. and a blood glucose level of 386 mg/dl is certainly too high. I would ask yourself how you got to that point. What do you think caused the BG to go so high? I am not sure if it was because of your meal because I don't know what your BG level was before you ate. You may have started off high and went even higher with that high carb meal. When you don't know why a BG is high it is a good idea to stop and think about what it could be. Are you taking your medications the way they were prescribed? Did you do less exercise than you do on most days? do you have an infection anywhere in your body (don't forget about mouth or dental infections) or did you just eat a meal with too many carbs that doesn't match with your medication level. At this point I suggest that you make an appointment with your physician and go with questions and ask your doctor what He/She thinks you can do. The sleeping problem can come from anxiety or depression or you might be one of the many people with diabetes that has sleep apnea. Today is a good time to make that appointment with your doctor to discuss your questions and fears.

I have found which foods cause my blood sugar to spike by testing-testing-testing. I took a 2 week time period and tested 2 hours after eating.Did this many times each day to find which carbs caused a spike. White bread, bagels, potatoes, all rice and the worst is pizza. I found I can have a small amount, taste sample of pasta, but never as a meal. Same with rice, 1/4 cup is it. Not happy but find that I feel better if I allow myself a small taste amount rather than trying to not eat it at all. I also found that I cannot combine 2 carbs as you did in your breakfast. The pear and cottage cheese would have been perfect and complete. Adding the bagel is too many carbs for one meal. For me, my b/s levels are better whenever I add a protein to any carb. I also can get my b/s down by walking nonstop for 15 minutes either outside,on the treadmill or around the house. This has helped me if I find my b/s too high before bed. However, if my b/s was as high as yours got, I would be calling my doctor.

Susiekay, I would check the content of the bagel. Bagels tend to be high in carb content. It may be beneficial to cut back on the bagel. Try maybe, half a bagel, pear, cottage cheese for breakfast. If that is still giving you high numbers I would consider not eating the bagel at all OR even trying a half of a half if bagels are an enjoyable part of your breakfast. It's a process of elmination. While it's not an exact science when it comes to carbs and BS but most individuals with diabetes will figure out what works best for them. Good luck! Healthyguy
