"My MD has suggested putting me on an ace-inhibitor to protect my kidneys. Is it appropriate if my blood pressure is fine & I want to have kids soon?"

Background Info Hide
I am 23 y.o. and have had type 1 diabetes for 6 years. I have great kidney function and have never had an abnormal kidney lab value. My blood pressures are always good (110/70) so I am worried that this drug could cause too low of blood pressure. Plus, I read that Ace-inhibitors are bad during pregnancy and I want to have children in a few years. I just want to know if this is a good idea or is it safe to hold off on starting these meds until after I have kids...

Dear heie0008, Most people with diabetes are routinely put on a medication to protect the kidneys. An ace-inhibitor is often used. Arbs can also be a drug of choice. Does your physician know you wish to become pregnant? I would definitely discuss this with your provider and ensure that any medications you take are safe for use during pregnancy.
