Feelings of discouragement and being overwhelmed with the day to day management of diabetes are normal. Periods of undue stress can also result in poor diabetes self management. Joining the dLife community is the first step to overcoming diabetes burnout. Talking about your feelings with others who understand the “ups and downs of diabetes” can reinforce that you are not alone. The dLife website is also a great resource for information regarding diabetes burnout and other emotional issues. Click on "Inspiration and Expert Advice" where you can find motivation and support. Go to the dLife Community Forum where you can talk to others who understand. Diabetes effects every aspect of your being – body, mind and spirit. For that reason diabetes management requires a team approach. You need a team of people working together to help you manage diabetes and all the struggles that come along with the disease. Team members may include your doctor, an endocrinologist, nurse, registered dietitian, exercise physiologist, podiatrist, ophthalmologist, dentist, mental health specialist, and pharmacist. While these professionals are trained in their specialty areas it is important to have people on your team that are specialist in teaching diabetes care. These are Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE). Your doctor, nurse, dietitian or pharmacist may be a CDE. A diabetes educator will work with you to explore your feelings and fears about living with diabetes. By getting to know you a diabetes educator can help you set goals and come up with problem solving strategies to reach your goals. To find a diabetes educator in your area visit www.diabeteseducator.org or call 800-832-6874.

Wow! it sounds like you are having a meltdown. Diabetes can be alot harder to manage if you don't have the right self management skills and don't have a team to work with. If you are feeling overwhelmed I suggest you talk this over with your physician to determine if you might be suffering from depression or chronic stress. People with diabetes are twice as likely to develop depression and living with a chronic disease without the right support and stess reducing activities as part of your daily life can surely put you over the edge. It is a good idea to find a support group in your area and sign up for a diabetes self management program. The more you learn about living life with diabetes the better you will be able to make the appropriate changes and everything will get better. Remember that there is alot of great educators to guide you and the DLife community too!

I will tell you you will never want to stop taking your insulin, please I am telling you because I atopped taking my meds because I didn't want to gain weight and I lost a total of 135lbs. The only reason was they call it diabetes anoxia ?? I was dring from Ma to Fl and I want into a diabetic coma behind the wheel and side swiped someone and didn't even know it. I continued to drive a distance of 20 more miles. Please take your shots. I will keep you in my prays. I fighting the same battle and I'm sure alot of other people are doing the same. Talk to a real friend that will listen to you, your minister, I feel it has to be someone personal to you. If you can really take to your Dr is the good. Sometimes its hard to find one that really takes the time to listen but their out there. You can talk to a Psy, it doesn't mean you crazy they have to sit and listen for an hour. Take advantage of it. I really believe it is the hardest disease their is. You do wonder why, will it ever end, no, and I myself am just realizing I have to at least give my Dr a try and take my insulin, because I want to live. Look around you girl it not that bad and you have alot to live for. Your family. Food for thought: You think it is hard to take the shots and prolong your life by doing so, think of your family everytime you take a shot how bad it would be without you the pain you would put them thru. Good luck you can write back anytime you would like. Maybe taking to each other it might make things easier. It would be fun to have a penpal to discuss the ups and downs of our life with diabetes. I thought of something else. My Dr has me on bybeta you take it 15 minutes before meals and it is suppose to help with the weight gain. It is insulin that makes it had to lose weight. For your neuropahy I take Lantus 300mg twice aday and I don't have much pain. Instead of lantus which I was on he changed it to levemir which is suppose to help with weight gain. Hope to here from you soon.

Ro6Ro6, Please dont give up! I know its a pain in the tail but taking your meds is what will help you in the end. My mom has type 2 and i am a pre-diabetic. It may not end but...taking your meds can prevent more meds! My mom had not taken her meds for a little over a year due to my father being in and out of jobs and no insurance. She finally got insurance this past year...She has to be on a blood pressure pill, heart pill, 2 diabetic pills, 2 types of insulin (1 before every meal and 1 before bed), she had to get 3 different eye operations, etc. She also has arthritis (some of these things run in the family but has gotten worse due to diabetes) and is overweight; she feels like nothing can fill her no matter what diet she is put on. I am on only 1 pill but find eating a hard task. But find someone to vent to or that can go through this with you. Surround yourself with caring wonderful people or pets. I find doing this with my mom helps her and me, we become stronger together. For when she isnt there i have my 3 kittens. Also working out can be fun, find a sport you like or go swimming. Swimming is one of the easiest ways to start loosing weight as it is easiet on the body. It may take some time to get over that feeling and it may come and go...but DONT GIVE UP! I believe in you! I wish you the best of luck!

I know how you are feeling. I do not have diabetes but my husband does. He is a very strong together guy but even he has times of grief and being sick of it. I am bi polar so with medicines and doctors we have the double whammy. I think you are saying you feel tired, angry and "sticking" yourself hurts. No one deserves diabetes. Please find some one to vent to. Please ask your Dr to test you for depression (it's a questionaire) no big deal. Then ask dr to check your thyroid

First you have to understand that it will never end. What you have to start doing is to out smart this unresting monster. In order to do that you have to put your mind at ease. I have had this insulin managing problem for over 30 years. I would first try to understand that eating is a disorder for you when you don't feel good. Many times what you can eat and what you should eat become more of a mental challenge than a physical one. Rule number one, when you can eat, eat what you can. Don't get too hung up on what it is or if it will raise your sugar too much. That is what taking insulin, excercise, and glucose monitors are for. Using these things will empower you to be in control. Even if you make a mistake, learn from it. Try to remember what you did wrong and fix it so it won't happen again. Soon, your aches and pains will be less often because you are treating yourself better and you'll feel better. Think of the cave man who had nothing on his back but a fur animal skin. Now compared to that, do we really have it that bad? Off the record, if you have to cut back a little on checking your BS, it might help you. Checking blood sugars are important but I find it can ruin my image of how I am managing things, only because of it's brutal honesty it can make you feel a need to do something about it. I personally have a routine down so well that I don't even use my BG monitor. Unless I am really in trouble.Do not change your insulin or meds, ever, without consulting a doctor. As far as nueropathy, dry skin and other problems. Your patient education people can make suggestions to help relieve symptoms and the need for special care of feet. You should use lotion on your feet every day and on your dry skin. better BS control also eases these things from being a big bother. So, learn more, talk to friends, and feel confident. That will make these worries go away put YOU in control, not MR. Monster.

Dear RoRo6, I have type 2 diabetes which I try to manage with humolog x3 & lantusx2. I went from 6 months in the hospital to an occasional over 170 reading. I know what a hassle it is but I feel so much better with the medications. Please know that my rooting for you. I have a dog who takes me for a walk every morning about 8:30 am and if I dragging my feet she will pull my socks out of the drawer to give me a clue. She a riot.
