"How much fiber is too much fiber? What are possible negative effects of too much fiber in the diet?"
Asked By: alowe13

Background Info Hide
Type 1 diagnosis one year ago at age 24. I eat a lot of super-high fiber foods like wraps with 12g of fiber and Atkins bars with as much as 11g fiber. Also lots of veggies. Sometimes I have severe stomach cramps after eating, and am wondering if fiber is to blame.

Yes! Too much fiber can most certainly cause gastro intestinal distress. I would suggest you scale back on the processed foods containing high amounts of added fiber and stick to whole, fiber-rich foods (such as fruits, veggies, and whole grains like barley) for a while. Or limit yourself to just one of these high-fiber products per day. See if that eliminates your tummy troubles.

Your reaction may be from the sugar alcohols in the bars. You have to watch how many snacks and candies you eat as most of them contain maltitol or sorbitol, which can cause significant digestive distress. Check the label; Erythritol is a sugar alcolhol that is usually well tolerated. Oligofructose and polydextrose are sweet fibers that are less of a problem unless eaten in large amounts. Sucralose, stevia, and other high-intensity sweeteners shouldn't have this negative effect.
