This is a common problem for many patients with diabetes. We recommend several things to our patients. First, change your bathing soap to a milder brand. Second, apply the lotion to your skin as soon as you finish bathing and repeat the lotion several times a day, at least twice a day. Some very good lotions are, Curel Dry Skin Cream, Nivea Dry Skin Intensive Care Cream, and Elta Cream. Also, avoid very hot water when bathing, this can worsen the dryness and itching. Good Luck!

I've had eczema all my life, along with very dry, sensitive skin. One of my dermatologists described dry skin as "leaky skin". Moisture leaks out, because the skin doesn't have enough of its own oil to seal the moisture in. To remedy this, you need to put an oil, cream, balm, etc. onto wet or damp skin. Lotions don't usually have enough oil in them to really work. You need something with oil in it. Try using a vegetable oil (not a mineral oil or petrolatum). You can actually use crisco. My current favorite is sweet almond oil. Give it a try and good luck!
