RD, LD, PHD, CDE, BC-ADM
Janice lives in Iowa City, IA. She has worked as a registered dietitian for 33 years and has experience working in all clinical and administrative aspects of Dietetics. She is currently serving as the Interim Program Manager of the Nutrition and Food Service Department and as a Clinical Dietitian Specialist in Diabetes and Renal Nutrition.
Janice graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Dietetics and Community Nutrition in 1974. She completed a Dietetic Internship at Hines VA Medical Center, Hines, IL.
She is married to a clinical pharmacist who works at a nearby hospital. He has also attained a BC-ADM credential and the couple is frequently in discussion about clinical management of diabetes. They have two grown sons. One son is in medical school at the University of Nebraska, Omaha and will complete a dual MD/PhD degree in 2012. His research may contribute to finding a cure for diabetes. He is engaged to a young woman who is also a medical student. Due to her diagnosis of type 1 diabetes when she was five, she is pursuing a career as a Pediatric Endocrinologist. Their other son is an attorney, specializing in family law.
Janice has completed three graduate degrees leading to her doctorate in Instructional Design and Technology for Health Science Majors from the University of Iowa. Her enjoyment of studying how people learn and how they retain and use the information teach to them has helped her appreciate the difficulty in helping people change behaviors.
Janice has worked on a contract basis for the AADE, writing the tests that must be completed to obtain CEU (Continuing Education Units) credits for an educational unit. She has also been an approver for CPE (Continuing Professional Education) units for dietitian continuing education and served as chair of the External Materials Review Committee for AADE for one year.
Janice has enjoyed being actively involved in many professional organizations. She has served on the Board of Directors of AADE for four years and chaired the Chapter Presidents Council. She has held a variety of offices within the Iowa Dietetic Association, including being president in 1998-1999. Currently, Janice is the delegate from Iowa to the American Dietetic Association House of Delegates. She is also active within the Veterans Affairs Health Care System, serving on the Field Advisory Committee to the National Director of Food and Nutrition. In addition, Janice has chaired the VA?s RD Education Committee for seven years, which involves planning national meetings for VA Dietitians. She is a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, which raises funds for diabetes services, and the Pilot Club International, which raises funds for brain injury prevention and services.
Janice attained her original CDE certification in 1999 and BC-ADM certification in 2001. She is a member of the dLife Professional Advisory Committee and enjoys helping people who write in to the various columns and helplines, including the dLife Holiday Helpline. One of my clients was even featured on an episode of dLifeTV.
In her spare time, Janice loves to travel and enjoys great beaches and warm weather. She also enjoys going to auctions and buying antique dishes. Her new passion is selling her new treasures on eBay. She also have four ?granddogs? which she enjoy spoiling like the grandchildren she does not have.
