The Question

Shannon Lyles

Shannon Lyles has had type 1 diabetes since 1996 and that is what led her to choose a career in nursing, specifically diabetes education. She has been employed by the University of Florida, College of Medicine, Department of Pediatric Endocrinology since September 2002. In her current position, Shannon teaches diabetes education to newly diagnosed and established patients; sees patients in clinic for their routine visits; coordinates the insulin pump program, including teaching insulin pump class and initiating pump therapy in patients; answers phone calls and emails from patients; and whatever else is required to help out her patients. Shannon has been an active volunteer with Florida Camps for Children & Youth with Diabetes (FCCYD) since 1998 where she started out as a camper, then became a counselor, and now is a nurse. Shannon participates in various weekend and weeklong programs with FCCYD throughout the year. Shannon loves going to diabetes camp and thinks all kids with diabetes should attend in order to see they are not alone. In her spare time, Shannon enjoys traveling, photography, hanging out with family and friends, church activities and going on mission trips.
