Marijuana May Be Effective for Neuropathic Pain

Digg This! | Send to Newsvine | Add to del.icio.usJune 25, 2008 (Newswise) - The growing body of evidence that marijuana (cannabis) may be effective as a pain reliever has been expanded with publication of a new study in The Journal of Pain reporting that patients with nerve pain showed reduced pain intensity from smoking marijuana.
Researchers at University of California Davis examined whether marijuana produces analgesia for patients with neuropathic pain. Thirty-eight patients were examined. They were given either high-dose (7%), low-dose (3.5%) or placebo cannabis.
The authors reported that identical levels of analgesia were produced at each cumulative dose level by both concentrations of the agent. As with opioids, cannabis does not rely on a relaxing or tranquilizing effect, but reduces the core component of nociception and the emotional aspect of the pain experience to an equal degree. There were undesirable consequences observed from cannabis smoking, such as feeing high or impaired, but they did not inhibit tolerability or cause anyone to withdraw from the study. In general, side effects and mood changes were inconsequential.
It was noted by the authors that since high and low dose cannabis produced equal analgesic efficacy, a case could be made for testing lower concentrations to determine if the analgesic profile can be maintained while reducing potential cognitive decline.
In addition, the authors said further research could probe whether adding the lowest effective dose of cannabis to another analgesic drug might lead to more effective neuropathic pain treatment for patients who otherwise are treatment-resistant.

I am happy to hear that this study points toward testing of lower doses for effectiveness. As a newly "licensed" user under California law, I have been treating cannabis as I treat any prescribed medication, working with my provider to find the optimal dose, both for maximizing benefit and minimizing undesirable effects. I have been surprised by how small an amount of cannabis can be effective, compared to the amount commonly ingested in social, casual, or "self-medicating" use. I look forward to more research in this area.

i personaly would indulge in smokeing marijuana for pain amoung other things like depression.it has in the past helped me to forget about the things that were depressing me, and helping me to get on with my life.unfortunatly, the work world does,nt care if you are depressed or in pain.neither does the law.so unless something happens in the future,we are bound by the laws of the land and must deal with what ails us in a differant way,or god forbid, risk a life in prison.

I have known or known of so many people who suffered extreme pain due to neuropathy. I am an advocate for the medical use of marijuana for whatever medical conditions may benefit. To deny people the potential benefit of marijuana because of the possibility of abuse is to "throw the baby out with the bathwater". I hope someday that this country will develop a saner approach to the use of marijuana and other such substances that may have therapeutic benefits.

I would like the choice from man made pain relievers to natural pain relievers.I TRUELY BEIEVE MAN MADE PILLS ARE GOING TO AID IN MY PREMATURE DEATH I HAVE TO STOP THESE PILLS ON MY OWN OF SUFFER THE COST. I think pot definitaley helps one to forget out the pain for about 3 hours at around a quarter to a half a ciggerette. I ALSO THINK PEOPLE WHO CAN NOT STOP THINKING ABOUT A ILLNESS THAT HAS TAKEN OVER THERE LIFE POT WOULD MOST DEFINITELY GIVE THAT PERSON THE MUST NEEDED BREAK OF DWELLING ON ONES PROBLEM AND MAY INFACT HELP THEM TO DO MORE POSITIVE THINGS LIKE EXERSISE FOR EXAMPLE. I KNOW FOR ME SINCE IT IS ILLEGAL I DO NOT PERTICIPATE IN THE SMOKING OF POT HOWEVER THE STRENGTH OF TODAYS POT THE PATEINT WOULDN'T NEED AS MUCH AS ONE WOULD THINK ONE POT CIGGERETTE SHOULD LAST THE PATEINT ALL DAY RELEVE.IN CLOSEING I WOULD LIKE THE CHOICE I THINK OUR GOVERMENT WOULD MAKE A HUGE WINFALL OF TAXES THAT COULD GO TO SOMTHING GOOD LIKE OUR RODAS OR ANYTHING POSITIVE, AS WELL THE PEOPLE PUT IN JAIL FOR POT THINK OF THE HUGE SAVINGS WE WOULD GET IF WE PUT REAL CRIMINALS IN JAIL. ALSO I WOULD LIKE TO COMMENT ON A SHOW CALLED COPS I DON'T REALLY CARE FOR THAT SHOW HOWEVER THIS TIME I HAPPEN TO WATCH THE PROGRAM ANYWAY IT WAS ABOUT DRUNK DRIVERS ON ANY GIVEN FRIDAY NIGHT. I BELEIVE ABOUT TWENTY DRUNK DRIVERS WERE ARRESSTED THAT SHOW 90 PERCENT WERE RUDE OR ACTING STUPID OR SICK AND HALF WERE VIOLENT AND NEEDED RESTRIANTS. THEN THERE WAS A COUPLE WHO WERE ARRESSTED FOR POT AND I COULD NOT BELIEVE THE CONTRAST THE COUPLE WHO HAD THE POT WERE SO MELLOW AND POLITE AND QUITE IT WAS QUITE A EYE OPENER. I WISH EVERYONE COULD SEE THAT SHOW I SAW THAT NIGHT.
