I'm only 19, T2, is it possible I can be balding or something?!!? My boyfriend noticed the other day that the left side of my hair line is a little farther back than the right. I'm on glyburide/metformin, taking it once a day. I'm scared!!! Lol

Britt....don't know if it's a side effect of any particular diabetes meds..but hair loss CAN be an indication of a possible thyroid deficiency. Don't panic & start buying hats or wigs   ..but definitely bring it to your PCP's attention.
And as always...don't self diagnose. K? ;)

Brittany,

Are you seriously losing more hair than naturally occurs? There are many reasons for this to occur, stress being one of them. But also, have you ever had your thyroid checked? Because untreated hypothyroidism causes hair loss and also brittle nails, among other things.

Take care you and get it checked out if you really think this is happening.

I'm not sure if I really am losing my hair, I know I shed a lot but it doesn't come out in total clumps. But my boyfriend was playing with my hair the other night and pushed away from my face and asked if I was because he said the left side of my hairline looked farther back than he thought it should be.

I don't think my nails are brittle, I get them done every few weeks.

I have a dr appointment on the 9th, I will have to get bloodwork done, so I will be sure to mention to him to test my thyroid.

i do not think it is something to do with diabetes. may be you have some other problems. or maybe its not that too much hair loss. better see a doctor.

Just wondering, have you had any type of surgery? Back when I was in my 40's I began to notice how thin my hair was. At first I thought it was imagination. Then one day I had my sun-roof open on my car and with the sunlight streaming in my scalp was like blazing white! I knew that it wasn't my imagination. I have taken thyroid meds for years & have it checked. I have hypertension & t2 diabetes. I have had several surgeries and a hairdresser told me that anesthesia plus the shock your body goes through can cause you to lose hair. I started using shampoos for thinning hair. While it didn't come back as good as it was, it came back enough. So if you have gone through something like that maybe that's the cause. You should ask your md for sure tho.

Don't panic, Brittany!! It could be nothing or it could be something easily solved. As the others have said, bring this to the attention of your Dr, ask him to check your thyroid function. I went thru something similar several years ago. Thyroid checked out ok. Turned out it was a little known side-effect of a med I was taking! So a switch of prescriptions stopped the hair loss and it all grew back just as thick as before.

Hi there,

It could also be low iron levels. My MD informed me that my iron levels were low and I need to increase the levels through iron rich foods (read meat etc) and supplements. Just started this regime- will have to let you know if the hair loss stops.

Cheers ;)
