I was diagnosed with GD 6 weeks ago (at 24 weeks pregnant). I diligently follow my diet - measuring all my carbs - 15g at breakfast and snacks, 30g at lunch and dinner. At first my post-meal numbers were good, but my fasting sugars just wouldn't come down - always hovering around 105. My doctor put me on glyburide after just one week of diet and has raised my dose every single week. Then my post-meal numbers started going high also. I'm now on 5 mg in the morning and 10 mg before bed. Finally my fasting numbers are below 95, but I still have occasional high BG readings (145-160) one hour after meals - especially lunch. I'm terrified that I'm going to have to take insulin and even more terrified that I'll have to be induced early or have a c-section. I feel like the GD has taken all of the joy out of being pregnant. Any advice?

Your going to have be strict with your diet. I am even now and I'm no longer pregnant and am Type 2. For breakfast, very little if no carbs. I eat 2 eggs and sausage every morning with my cups of coffee. For lunch I usually give myself only 15g. of carbs and never go over 45 g for dinner. 1 Snack is also just 15 g. Save your snack for when you know you are the most in need of food. NUTS, Make friends with them. I love them and they satisfy my needs for the most part. Don't let it ruin you. I had GD by week 32 and lived on this diet. I have lost 24 Lbs. doing it. I also had a 6Lbs 14 ounce baby girl back in October 2007. We are planning on having baby number 2. You can do it. Especially when you know why you are doing it. I did everything for my little girl and it worked out just great. Best Wishes.

I feel your frustration and I am not you but I didnt want insulin either. Believe it or not going on isnulin wont mean you have to say on it for life if you get things in order. Much of this is weight gain so eat healthy and dont stress as stress raises bs oh joy the fun of it.

I'm sorry. :( I feel your frustration, I'm there too. I started insulin a few days ago, after following the diet for about 2 weeks, for the same reason...my fasting numbers were too high, usually 100-110ish. (They went straight to insulin for me because I couldn't take the pill due to a drug allergy.) So far, the insulin doesn't seem to be helping much, and my after breakfast numbers are high too, although I seem to even out more through the rest of the day.

I have the same concerns, though...I'm afraid of going too early, or having to have a c-section, or the baby having complications from it. It definitely changes things...with my first child, I didn't have any pregnancy complications to speak of, so while I still had the regular worries just because, I didn't have any specific reasons to worry really. Hang in there...hopefully everything gets straightened out soon and you (we!) can get those numbers better under control.

Oh, and as far as the insulin...I really did NOT want to go there either, but it's not horrible. I hope you won't have to end up with that, but if you do, you can do it.
