Hi everyone.

I am a 36-year old male with a new diabetes diagnosis, as of Oct. 2. Just in time for Halloween. :)

I'm currently on insulin (Levemir and Novolog, both pens). My BG was in the high-300's when I presented, my A1c was 13.0. Now I'm running 140 or so averages over the last week, which I'm happy with but I think I can do better.

I just got referred to an endo in the area who is very well regarded.

I'm curious - my doctor and the rest of the team kind of assumed I was type 1, because of my age and physical appearance (I'm 5'10" and 158, a little undersized frankly).

My c-peptide came back with 1.01 and the GAD was negative.

I'm doing 45 units/day levemir and 1 unit of novolog/8g carbs. I seem to be very sensitive - when I underdose, I'll go up to 250/300 pretty quickly.

Does anyone have experience or opinions on this? I'm staying on insulin until I get in with the endo, which may take a couple months.

Thanks,
Marty

Hi Marty sounds like you could be a type 1.5 look for the thread on it here. Then put in a google on it, sounds like you could be a prime example of one. My mom sorta fell into what you are at 5' 4" and 100 lbs told she was type 2 but needed insulin. You have to do just like what we all do, watch your carb intake and exercise. By the way welcome to dlife love to have you here.

I have done some reading and that makes sense to me.

I've been very impressed at the resources available for diabetics online.

Thanks for the response, and I look forward to participating in the community.

i think you made a mistake, a1c of 13 seems way too high, especially for a newly diagnosed diabetic. thats an average of like 400 I think... mines 12.something and thats really awful. anyway, you sound like a type 1, good luck to you.

Marty,

Sounds like you and I are in the same boat. I am 31, about 6'3" and about 200lbs when I was "diagnosed" about a month ago. My A1C was 11% my BG was 300+ when first tested and my Ketones were 40+. I am waiting for the results of my GAD right now but I can not afford the C-Pep right now (no insurance). Meds (metformin) and diet have gotten me down to a fasting sugar of about 140 and a Ketone lever of about 15. It might be time to start insulin to get it better. (Ugh, I HATE needles) But someone PLEASE correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that you needed a positive GAD for you to be type 1 or type 1.5. At any rate, wait till you see the Endo. Many doctors know SOME about diabetes but not much. My mother is a doctor and we are having to learn about this stuff together. She knows about it but is far from an expert. That is what the Endo is for.

Just because someone is newly dx doesnt mean they cant have a high a1c. I was newly dx with bs almost 500 and an a1c of 13 so it can happen.

I had an A1C of 12% when I was just dx. All that means is that my average BS has been +300 for more than 120 days. (If I am not mistaken) I think I have been diabetic for about 5 years but did not know it and have been untreated.

That is why many of us get neuropathy within a few years of dx its hard to understand. Thing is we have had diabetes longer than what we think.

Boy you got that right about having it and not knowing it. I think I was uncontrolled for a while I believe. My A!C was 14 and my BG was 427 when I was diagnosed. I was a mess. Now my BG is 95-110 and on pills. 8-)
