Hi Lori what is happening is the body is loading the body up with insulin because there is resistance. Is it possible you are overweight at all. Many times insulin resistance is what type 2 is because it takes more insulin to go thru the weight especially around the belly. So many type 2 battle of the bulge and insulin resistance at the same time.

Pre-diabetes means you have elevated fasting blood glucose that is not yet high enough to be called full blown diabetes.
IR is a condition in which the body produces insulin but does not use it properly. To quote the NDIC:
"When people are insulin resistant, their muscle, fat, and liver cells do not respond properly to insulin. As a result, their bodies need more insulin to help glucose enter cells. The pancreas tries to keep up with this increased demand for insulin by producing more. Eventually, the pancreas fails to keep up with the body’s need for insulin. Excess glucose builds up in the bloodstream, setting the stage for diabetes. Many people with insulin resistance have high levels of both glucose and insulin circulating in their blood at the same time."
Physical activity and weight loss help the body respond better to insulin. So if you're pre-diabetic or IR, you can help your body use insulin more effectively by being physically active, making wise food choices, and reaching and maintaining a healthy weight. Physical activity helps muscle cells use blood glucose for energy by making the cells more sensitive to insulin.
Cheers.

Insulin resistance is cause by genes which determine your maximum weight and when one continue to overeat when they have reached their maximum weight, then isulin resistance is one of the body responses. That is why some rather thin people can have insulin resistance.
High levels of circulating insulin means your prancreas is under more stress that it should be, that you odds of developing diabetes are higher and if diabetes occurs, it will be at a younger age. A strong pancreas that produces lots of insulin can keep good glucose number for a long time, but if you live long enough you will probably get diabetes. Doing something, sheding a dozen pounds or two and keeping them off with a fitness program could add years to your life, add many quality years to your life and delay or prevent the onset of diabetes.
