Here is a link to a great brochure from www.behavioraldiabetes.org . It contains comments you can say to friends and loved ones who don't have diabetes to help them understand:

Hi:

Just smile and nod and find a way to slip out of the conversation. I don't like talking about D with non-diabetics, it is a waste of time generally.

Sometimes this can be done, but in captive situations we sometimes have to follow the example of Alan and Tom. I have found the card or paper offered by Janis and another be Roche, just don't go far enough. The long detailed lecture sometimes is the only way to make them not want to get involved in the future. And in some cases, people actually do learn and want to carry on an intellectual conversation about diabetes - which surprised me to no end.
