How do you refrain from eating unhealthy at social events?

I seem to be really good at being consistent with my exercising and eating, and my sugar levels clearly reflect I do well. But whenever I'm at social events and/or get pulled into going out to eat with friends at some restaurant, it is next to impossible for me to refrain from eating unhealthy food - even if I'm able to limit my portions of unhealthy food, with others around me I do not know how to get away from the unhealthy food and seek out the healthy food - any advice?

Don't know whether you are a diabetic or not or whether your friends know or not ---- order or select a large fresh veg. salad, select a vinegar or close to it, on the side. Select the healthiest meat you can see (lean) and for a drink - coffee or iced tea (no sugar or sugar substitute) or water. Little bit of fruit for dessert.

Anybody say anything - " Hey, trying to lower the cholesterol, you know how it is ". ;) ;)

Everyone in America is aware of choles. problems.

Nomad has a great suggestion. But it won't work unless you have resolve. You really need to be motivated and resolved that you will be making different choices. And choose a reason. Find a motivation.

This is the hardest thing to do for many people, including me. But I always have in the back of my mind my motivation and it helps me make the right lifestyle choice. I'm not saying I don't slip. I do. But I don't use that as an excuse to stop my journey. I just consider it a blip on my journey to getting and keeping as healthy as possible.

Good luck.

I can't help much because I have never used that sort of occasion as an excuse.

To me it's simple. If I eat the wrong things I will eventually die earlier than I should have and probably endure a long period of pain prior to death.

Consequently I have never had a problem, since I started testing after meals, refraining from over-eating or eating too many carbs at social functions. And it has never interfered with my enjoyment.

A wise good friend wrote this some years ago; she gave me permission to publish it on my blog. I think it may help you(click on the coloured text): Thanksgiving and other Feasts

If pressed to over-indulge I don't tell my friends I can't eat it; I simply say I don't eat it or I don't want it.

Try not to go to social events really hungry. Eat a healthy snack before going, then it's a lot easier to make better choices, when you're not STARVING!

My husband and I go out to dinner every Friday - date night for the empty nesters. While some places we go are harder then others to find a good choice, all of them have at least one item on the menu that I can feel good about ordering. I feel I have become an expert on which places (locally) have the best (and worst) Taco Salads!

For me portion control has become huge in controlling my BS. My husband is a big guy (over 6') and a truck driver. And he can really put it away! Even though I'm considerably smaller I can eat just as much as he does without really trying. In a restaurant I divide up my meal on my plate, I'm eating this much and that much is going home with me. I get the part I'm taking packaged up as quickly as I politely can. Regarding portion control - when I just have to have a french fry - I steal off his plate! Usually only get one or two that way.
Hope this helps.
