I just joined the board, but I have been a diabetic for a while. I am currently using the One Touch UltraSmart and love it. I like the ability to track meds, food, exercise and medical visits. I was expensive, but I bought it with the anticipation that I would be going in insulin soon and figured you can't track too much information. Just my $0.02.

My favorite Meter is the Accu-chek Aviva. I like the way it slurps up the blood which is a teeny-tiny amount and I love the Multiclix lancing device that comes with it. The multiclix can't be beat.

I like OneTouch Ultra2 Meter becos it allows me to monitor my food intake and glucose levels. I tend to overeat at times so this meter helps me to control my food diet.
I use the One Touch Ultralink because it talks directly to my pump. the only thing that it doesn't have that most meters do is a backlight. I have vision difficulties and it would be nice.

I recently bought a True2Go (http://www.prestigesmartsystem.com/our_ ... ue2go.aspx). I'm pretty sure it's the smallest meter available, except, the way they designed it, you are supposed to attach it to the top of a can of strips. Not a bad idea, but in practice, it doesn't work well, because you need to carry a separate lancing device, and I want everything together in one case/package. I've been trying to design a case (I think I can make a good one- except, it will require cutting/filing/sanding the bottom of the meter off, which seems like a MAJOR hassle.) The thing is too damn thick- it has a "lip" which is used to attach to the strip can, and that part can probably be removed. Other than the major design flaw (thickness), I also don't like that it's not backlit (I test quite often in the dark with my Freestyle Flash). If I ever get around to designing a case, and it proves a worthy companion, I'll post pics.

I am surprised that so few people use the Bayer Contour. I just got a brand new one (free - yay!), and it has every feature except backlighting, which is not a problem for me - I don't test in the dark. It's very small, and it comes with a handy case that carries the meter, the strips, and the lancet and spares. It's about twice the size of my wallet, and comes with two different straps so you can carry it on your belt. It also has a nice little pocket on the back so you put in a card with your phone number so it can be returned if lost. I haven't got the computer link yet, but that's probably coming. For now, I just enter it into my spreadsheet. Its memory can hold 480 results, and it calculates 7, 14, and 30 day averages, plus a lot of bells and whistles that I'm not using right now, like alarms to remind me to test after meals.
My only complaint is the cost of strips. I bought a box of 200 yesterday, and paid $180 Cdn for them. I've only been using insulin for about 3 weeks, so I'm testing frequently to see the patterns. Luckily, I got on a new drug plan, so I'm covered for now.

I used a Freestyle for 2 1/2 years. But I started on Insulin last month (Type 2 now Insulin Dependent). Dr. noticed a problem with my A1c and what my logs showed for readings. A quick test showed that the readings were 27 to 30 mg/dl lower than they really were. So I purchased a new Bayer ContourUSB. Hard to find, but Walgreen's web site has them. The Control Solution came with it. A quick test showed it was accurate. I am now using it only. It has a back-lit color display, as well as some great built in software to help manage. Being able to see Trends as well as marking before meals and after meals. At the end of the day, just plug it in to the USB port on the front of the computer and it downloads all of my daily readings and stores them. At the end of the week you can print them out or e-mail them in PDF format to your Dr. Another nice feature is no batteries to change, it has rechargeable batteries, they recharge from your USB port or the wall adapter that came with it. You need to check it out at Bayer. Go to http://www.bayercontourusb.us/. Might be the best thing to come along in meters.

Did you actually compare the 2 meters by testing on both at the same time? I usually do that when I get a new meter... I used to find some ran a bit higher or lower than my old one, but they were usually consistently higher or lower. Nowadays, they seem more accurate (compared to another meter- I guess it's possible that they are both wrong, but I'll take my chances with that). I don't know how you could compare an a1c result with your meter results, unless you test 50 times per day (or, unless your a1c is extremely high or low).
