For lunch last weekend I had a tuna sandwhich
60z can albacore tune in water
1 tablespoon regular mayonaise
1/2 cup chopped green onion
2 slices orowheat double fiber whole grain bread
few pieces romaine/iceberg lettuce mix.

I took my GB before eating 146 and then 1 hour after (my dietician recommended I do 1 hour after eating till we meet again) 157 Great I only went up 11 points

Later that week I had a slice of homemade turkey loaf and 1/2 cup brown rice
Ground turkey
greed, red, orange, bell pepper
oatmeal 1/4 cup
egg beaters
pace picante sauce
dash salt pepper
onion

before eating 159 1 hour after 172 Good again right only up 13 points

Then... and here's my confusion, the next night for dinner I had the same size portion turkey loaf and 2 slices of the orowheat double fiber bread before 142 1 hour after 206!!!!! Where did that come from ? How is that possible, I had eaten those things before and did so good. Can anyone help with an explanation?

Are you always that high before you eat? If I was that high and I am only speaking for myself I would not be able to eat any carbs at all. Did you test again at the 2 hour to see if your BS kept rising or came down? That is what I would do but then I only test at 2 hour unless I feel horrible and need to see if my sugar level is the reason.

Our sugar levels can be very unpredictable. I would log it which I assume you are doing and be sure to show it to your dieititian.

I did forget to mention that I am new to this only got diagnosed in march, I know I am not in the normal range yet, but considering I was in the 250's plus in March I'm going in the right direction. I just hope I can continue to eat those things without such a jump

you can try washing your hands and retesting when you get one that does not make sense to be sure it not just a bit of food residue on your finger that caused the high number

many things can contribute to a different reading. Portions (if you are eyeballing you could be getting a bit more), time of day, allergies, monthly cycle, getting sick, stress, ( I went into the 300's during a tornado), amount you exercise (exercise helps with glucose production even beyond the initial session. I find that I process better if I exercise at a particular time of day-it is possible you do as well)

See, too many things and such to take a guess as to why you had a high reading.

Log it, and any other things you can think of. Did you have a headache? I go high sometimes with one. Were you unusually stressed? All that stuff....

One unusual high is not a big deal. It happens. It is patterns and constant highs that need to be looked at. Check to see if there is a pattern. Best way is to have a log book and keep track. If there seems to be a pattern, then you might see it in your log, or your doctor may be able to help you discover the reason.

Congrats on coming down!!! That tells you are on the right course. As I may have told you before, it took me 6 months to get where I needed to be, so keep up the good work.

The only thing that I noticed that was different was that you added two slices of bread. That could be a substantial difference.

One of the things that testing will tell you is how various foods affect your blood glucose. Looks like a "yes" on the brown rice, and a "maybe" on bread. Try it with only one slice of bread next time and test to see where you are. Different combinations at different times can also have an affect. Before exercise and after, for instance. Sounds like you're doing the right things, and I'm happy to hear that your numbers are coming down. Keep it up! And good health.

I want to comment on the one hour after meal testing, do you have a faster than normal digestion? 1 hour after eating is not the standard time to test. Even people with no diabetes will have an elevated bg reading at 1 hour after start of meal, that is normal. That is just your body digesting the meal and absorbing the nutrients for energy. The recommended testing of bg is usually 2 hours after start of meal. What did your doctor tell you about when to test? What are your readings 2 hours after start of meal? I have slow digestion and so I test 2-1/2 to 3 hours after start of my meal. That is not the usual length of time but my digestion problems make that a more reasonable time.

I do the one hour after testing too. The reason is to find when and how much I spike with a certain food and so the next time I eat that food I can make adjustments such as eating less of that food or even preparing the food differently so I will not have such as great a spike. I was at a CWD Conference and the keynote speaker recommended this practice and not letting my biggest spike be greater than 180. Really helps.

Did you have the turkey loaf the first time for lunch or dinner?

I ask because I seem to run high if I have carbs at dinner. I have learned that if I eat any carbs with dinner I will go very high after 2 hours. I now eat very, very few carbs with dinner. I'm having chicken and vegetables for example.

I can eat the same thing for dinner and be high, have it the next day for lunch and be perfectly fine. That's just what I'm learning about myself.

Take it for what it's worth...I've only been doing this for a month so I am by no means an expert or anywhere even near one. :)

shellie,

None of us are experts, we all are in this together with trial and error. Thank you for sharing what you did about the difference in your two meals. This is how we help each other out and what works for one doesn't always work for another but it sure is worth a try. Again, thanks,

Ginny
