Hi! I was diagnosed with insulin resistance this year. My blood sugar level is completely normal (for now). I was put on metformin to help lower my blood insulin level which is extremely high. I am having a hard time adjusting to the metform do the gastro problems ever get better or should i see about switching meds?
Lynn - yes you do. Although most of us talk about high blood glucose, IR can also lead to diabetes because it forces your pancreas to work harder and harder until the pancreas fails. Once that happens, you are a diabetic.
It's also possible that eventually you'll also suffer from high blood glucose as your body's own insulin production fails to keep up.
The goal for you is to reduce IR. And the way you do that is by changing lifestyle habits now. Increase your physical activity, get off of refined carbs so you're not loading your system with fast sugar and lose weight if you're overweight.
Physical activity that increases muscle mass as well as aerobic activity to increase blood circulation will help your body use the insulin more effectively.
Good luck and welcome aboard. Maybe we can have a new topic called the IR thread.
Cheers.
