Hello all,

I have been reading through the topics and since its seems to be a nice community I thought I would introduce myself. I tell people I was diagnosed 2 months ago but that is more when I began to treat and manage it. In January my doctor told me I was diabetic gave me some metformin and sent me home. The next time I came back she said I would have to go on insulin if my sugar did not come down. This was in the midst of a difficult year. I had been a single mom for a few month and my youngest had just had a malignant brain tumor removed. We just celebrated a year with no reoccurance. So I have finally decided to take care of myself so I can be here for all my kids. I am so confused. I am type 2 but on three shots a day. I have been told that I am not producing any insulin. I lost 130 lbs because it was so out of control I was rotting to death. I don't really understand it. I am frustrated wth the world that seems to think that it is no big deal to have diabetes. So I am happy I found this place. I am hoping to learn all that I can and stick with this. I have to.

jburkh2 it does seem like diabetes is the step-child of the world. :o listen there is a joke about "they said chear up it could be worse, I cheared up and it got worse." I got the feeling that, that has be your year. if trials make you stronger you should able to pick up a small truck. there are other who can give you words of wisdom about a type 2 not producting insulin, but i have heard of type 2 becoming type 1 when they stop producing insulin. you might try the type one club house. good thought for you

Hello My Name is Shelly. I don't have dieabetes but my Mom-n-law does.I am so worried about her, she is an older lady in her 70's and overweight. She says that her Dr. said her diabetes isn't as bad as some, she can take pills but she doesn't have to cut out sugar all together. She says that she can have a "taste". She hordes the stuff all over the house. I try to tell her not to buy it but of course she doesn't listen to me, she can do what she wants. Have any ideas to get her to stop buying the sugary stuff? Thanks. Shelly

Hi jburkh2 sounds like you have had it pretty rough. Losing 130 lbs do to uncontrolled diabetes can be pretty hard on the body you are very lucky you made it thru that. Your bs must have been extremely high for that to happen. If the doc says your not producing any insulin that would make you a type 1. Not sure if the did a GAD and cpeptide test on you but they should have. If you werent able to produce insulin the metformin would not have helped you anyways. So watch your carb intake, the more carbs you take in the higher your bs goes. Eat fresh foods and get as much exercise as you can, exercise helps burn bs its a good thing. Were here for you if you need more help and information. I understand how frustrating diabetes can be but I sure hope you are testing your bs daily, it helps you know how food affects you and how you are doing. I am hoping that you have prevented damage from happening to you. One more thing is you were under a lot of stress, stress can raise bs but wont give you all the issues you had just make it worse. Just keep working on your food intake, exercise and testing and you should see a pattern.

G'day and welcome.

I think you are very wise deciding to "take care of myself so I can be here for all my kids."

Tell us a little more about the advice you have had from your doctors, the insulin and medications you are on and the diet and exercise regimen you follow. It is possible to be a type 2 with depleted insulin production, although you sound a bit young for that.

This gives you an idea of why I ask about your dietary regimen (click on the coloured text): Test, Review, Adjust

Have you discussed the possibility of LADA with your doctors?

If your doctor is clear on that we must presume the doctor is right.

At your next appointment you might ask the doctor whether you have had a GAD test or a C-Peptide test.

If you are not producing any insulin as your first post stated then your a type 1. I am amazed your doctor hasnt run a GAD or cpeptide test on you to see. At least you are on insulin so if your not producing any it is the correct treatment. Just the fact you lost all that weight points to extremely high bs, the body basically ate all the fat and muscle you had, that is why insulin is so important. When your bs is high it cant take glucose that the body needs to survive so it has to get energy form some place and its the fat and muscle it uses. I know that all this is confusing but I have to say sounds like the doc dropped the ball.
