Spring At Last

Warmer weather brings about easier exercising.

April 2008 —Ah, Spring! Just when I thought winter would last forever, spring has arrived. It doesn't matter that one day last week it was 65 degrees and two days later we had snow showers. Today the weather is back to 68 degrees. It is typical early spring in Indiana. What is important is spring is here, officially.


I confess, summer is my favorite season, but spring is a close second. I enjoy seeing the new plant and animal life indigenous to our area. Most of all, I love the promise of what is to come - warmth, longer days, sunshine, and being outside.

Many people make their resolutions to live healthier lives at New Years. It seems more logical to make mine in early spring. I usually promise to try to eat healthier and find time for more exercise, or something very similar. Whatever my resolutions, almost always, has some intended effect on my diabetes. (What doesn't affect living with diabetes?) It just seems spring is the best time to carry out my intentions.

I enjoy working in the yard, getting the flowerbeds ready for some new colorful flowers. Preparing for the vegetable garden is a favorite chore. The hard work is good exercise and great for my blood sugar. I can hardly wait for the fresh veggies. Who needs those glucose spiking carbs when all those veggies are just a few steps outside my back door? More vegetables means less rice, pasta and meat. That means fewer carbs, so I need less insulin to keep my blood sugar on track. Less meat (along with exercise) means I'm helping my cholesterol levels stay low. What's not to love about growing vegetables? Eating fewer carbs and getting more exercise is good for everyone's health, but a necessity for diabetics.

Besides all the planting, raking, digging, mowing, and whatever else the yard work may entail, there is also more frequent and longer walks. My husband, Bob, and I like to visit the state parks for hiking and checking out the new exhibits on the nature walk. We bring along the grill and some of our fresh vegetables and herbs for a delicious picnic. We love those grilled vegetables. The new puppy, Alexander, benefits from longer walks, too. Most of these things can be done, in some form, all year round, but springtime just seems right for increasing these activities. Who says doing activities that are good for you can't be enjoyable?

I'm looking forward to putting down the top on my Jeep and checking out our favorite places to visit on warm days. Okay, so driving around in my Jeep may not be good exercise, but it sure is good for my spirit and attitude. Isn't that what living a healthy life is all about? I want to feel good and be able to enjoy all the fun things out there. Diabetes doesn't have to spoil my fun. With a little planning, there isn't much that I can't do. As a matter of fact, I'm probably living a healthier life than I may have been without diabetes. I'd like to think I would eat healthy and exercise anyway, but since it is a necessity to live well with diabetes I am more aware and more likely to implement my healthy life style. I have more energy and a stronger feeling of well-being. With just a little bit of effort, it is worth it to stay healthy, even living with diabetes.

When you are out on the highway and see a bright, yellow Jeep driven by a woman with a big smile on her face go by, wave. It just might be me out having fun.
