Last week when I emailed my human resources rep about how to interpret the information I got from customer service about what is covered in regard to an insulin pump, the last thing I expected to hear was that as of Jan. 1 we'd have a new insurance company.

I really didn't think much of the insurance switch at the time. In fact, I never really have had such a vested interest in my insurance company until now. The biggest obstacle I saw when S. told me of the switch was that I might not get the same deal on an insulin pump as the customer service guy told me I could get.

Today as I was perusing web sites that compare diabetes devices, I realized that this new insurance company might not cover my One Touch supplies. We were assured that the old plan and the new plan were similar, but that doesn't mean the same toys are covered. I started to pout because I'm pretty attached to my One Touch Ultra Smart. Not to mention those adorable One Touch Ultra Minis. (I have the pink one in my purse!) Sure, I could pay for the strips out of pocket, but geez I'm broke enough as it is.

OK, so I could deal with having to use a different meter. Maybe. Like I said, I'm pretty attached to One Touch and I tend to not deal with change very well.

And then as I was emailing my endo today about maybe starting on a pump, it occured to me that I may have to give him up, too. Cripes! I love my endo. He's frank, he's honest, he's aggressive, he knows his stuff, and he doesn't chastize me for the way I eat (much). And damnit I like him.

I suppose part of my day tomorrow will be spent devouring information on the new insurance company's web site. Just the way I'd like to spend a Friday that happens to be a major deadline day.
