The baby woke up at 4:45 this am, feverish and hungry. She had four shots at her 4-month well-baby check yesterday so this was to be expected. I dosed her with baby analgesic and fed her and by then, it was past time for me to be up and about.

Last night I didn't do any of my morning prep work. Usually I try to shower, pack my food, maybe set up the coffee maker and make sure my meds are all set up in my weekly pill box. (I have TWO seven-compartment weekly pill boxes - just like an eighty-year-old). Maybe pick out my clothes. You know, all that stuff that you can do ahead of time to make the morning less stressful. I didn't do any so I could watch Kitchen Nightmares with my husband.

The four-year-old had 6 shots at his annual exam yesterday. I scheduled both kids together thinking it would be easier and less time I needed to take off of work. The "big boy" woke up whining and crying and saying his legs hurt. 3 shots in each thigh - I bet they hurt. Another dose of analgesic was administered. The whining and crying reached a previously unheard of morning level. Not the best way to ease into my day.

Finally we're out the door - only 40 minutes late! I usually keep my cell phone in my purse, but it had fallen out and I had it in my hand. My son couldn't climb up into his car seat because his leg hurt too much (a little 4-year-old drama accompanied this statement). I put my cell phone and coffee down on the roof of the car, got the kid buckled in, grabbed my coffee and got in the car.

Seven miles and 10 turns later I remembered that my phone was almost dead, so I reached for it to plug it into the car charger. That's when I realized I left it on the car roof. Visions of the nightmarish process of recovering from a lost cell phone danced in my head.

I pulled into daycare, hopped out to get my son and miracle of miracles - my cell phone was still on the roof of the car! Now I know what sunroofs are for - the rubber gasket of the sunroof had kept the phone from skittering off the car.

45 minutes later I finally made it to work. I started feeling jittery. I wasn't sure if it was my late breakfast, too much caffiene, low sugar or what. I hadn't had much caffiene. The stress should have raised my sugar. I grabbed my purse to test my sugar and lo and behold - I had no meter!

As it turned out, karma was still on my side and breakfast set me to rights and some deep breathing pulled me out of the manic craziness I was in. Tomorrow I will bring my spare meter to keep at work. I work with two people with type 1 diabetes and one person with type 2; but borrowing a meter seems much too personal, not to mention unhygenic.

Even if I'm up until midnight tonight, I WILL get my morning prep work done!
