The poem/song Auld Lang Syne is a toast to the departing year written by Robert Burns in 1788. I think that's a lovely sentiment. In that spirit, I'd like to salute my health in 2008.
2008 was a good year as far as diabetes. My A1C is stable, and regular exercise seems to help level out the glucose rollercoaster. I weigh just 1 pound more than last New Year's. That sounds more stable than reality - up as much as 15 pounds, down as much as 10.
My endocrinologist's office switched me to six months between visits from three. It's a good sign, with most conditions, if your doctor wants to see you less. I'll be seeing them this month, as a matter of fact.
I actually started an exercise regime. 14 sessions a month average since August. This is astonishing to me. All the things you read that say you can form a new habit in 21 or 30 days are lying as far as I'm concerned. It's been 5 months and just last week I started feeling like something was wrong when I missed a regular work-out. And it's still HARD to stick with the cardio session the 20 minutes it takes to get easier and feel good so I WANT to do the rest. The longest 20 minutes of the day.
I don't think I had a single sinus infection in '08. As a matter of fact, I only saw my GP doc once all year and it wasn't an upper respiratory infection!
Food is the health related area that I lost ground on this year. The transition to staying at home started some bad habits that the holidays just made worse. Oh yadda yadda yadda. I'm sick of talking about the whys and wherefores and my "plan".
Maybe food will be my New Year's resolution for '09. I used to think resolutions were a waste of time, but after finally crossing off "quit smoking" and "start exercising" the past couple years, maybe they do work - eventually.
Overall, my 2008 was quite a successful year healthwise. I'll toast the year's passing. With some faux virgin eggnog, of course.
