International Diabetes Federation
World Diabetes Day (WDD) was designated by the UN and is led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). This is the first such day observed by the UN. The federation hosts a Diabetes Atlas that is full of interesting and sometimes astounding information. I'm not going to recap it all here, but suffice it to say I am very lucky to have type 2 in the United States as opposed to most other countries in the world. A type 1 diagnosis is still a death sentence for many people in sub-Saharan Africa and other poor regions of the world. And this is 86 years after the discovery of insulin.
The IDF also publishes the DiabetesVoice, a quarterly magazine. It's addressed more to professionals than PWD but I found it very interesting. Check it out.
There's a lot of talk this WDD about type 2 becoming a pandemic. USA Today has a 4-part series about diabetes this week here, almost totally focusing on type 2. The total ignorance of a majority of the comments is astounding. But I digress; the actual articles are pretty good reading.
A few articles, like this one at Medical News Today, focus on type 1. I was not aware that type 1 diagnoses are growing faster also and faster yet in children under age 5. As a mother of 2 under the age of 5, this is frankly terrifying.
This post is just a round-up of some of the interesting things I found today when googling World Diabetes Day. Take a little time and read up on this disease of ours. Our very own dLife.com always has the latest news here. And let us look forward to the day when there are cures for all types of diabetes.
