Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of hanging out with three of the lovely ladies of the OC (the diabetes Online Community) - Kerri, Shannon and Nicole. We went to a great play at the Trinity Repertory Theatre, in Providence, RI, called Some Things Are Private. It discussed Sally Mann and the photographs she had taken of her children over the years. It was a fascinating subject and one that I, like many bloggers, struggle with, albeit on a much smaller stage than Mrs. Mann. As an aside, you can Google Sally Mann's photos. Some of them are breathtakingly, heartbreakingly beautiful.

After the show and a late lunch/early supper (wouldn't that be lupper?), Nicole gave me a private tour of the theater. It's a beautiful building and if you're ever in Providence, I strongly urge you to just go in to look at the lobby. They've done a beautiful job restoring what was once an old vaudeville hall.

As Nicole led me in to the smaller of the two theaters, she fell down a couple of stairs, smacking her head hard on the hand rail and banging her shin on the steps. My first reaction was, after "Oh my god, are you ok?" was "Do you feel low? You should probably test." After checking to make sure she wasn't bleeding from the head (she wasn't - but man, she cracked it hard), she tested. As she was getting her kit out, my head started racing. What if she's low? Oh crap (I didn't say crap, but this is a family blog, so I'm keeping it PG), I don't have any juice or glucose tabs or anything with me. I don't even know where the snack bar is in here. I don't know if anyone is around to get something from. Was there a Coke machine in the lobby? Crap, crap, crappity crap.

Thankfully, she clocked in kind of high, at 204 or so, so my worrying was for naught. We determined that she must have caught her heel on the tread of one of the steps when we noticed that her shoe had a small rip in it (which was a shame - they were really cute shoes). But it made me realize that, even when I don't have Olivia with me, I should probably carry some sort of fast acting glucose on me. You just never know when you might need it.

So now, in addition to being on the quest for the perfect handbag, I need to get something that I can keep in said bag, just for emergency situations like that one could have been. I'm thinking Smarties - those little rolls of candies you always get at Halloween. In looking them up online, I discovered that Smarties have 25 g of carbs per roll. That's pretty much perfect for treating a low in just about anyone. It's much neater than squirting cake frosting into someone's mouth. And, bonus, they taste good, too.

So that's my task for today. Find a couple of bags of Smarties. And try to avoid sneaking them for myself....

I started using smarties after tasting glucose tabs for the first time and realizing they tasted like smarties. 4 rolls have 25g of carbs. You can find them in the supermarket candy aisle, near the circus peanuts.

I love Smarties but I prefer M&M easier to find.

Julia - I have the egg on my head to prove my fall...

The young lady that was dressing the stage sent a note to my email that said "Oh, my God, I can't believe you got up so quick. I thought for sure you'd need medical attention the way it sounded when you hit..." My noggin was sore for the rest of the weekend... LOL.

I had some glucose tabs in my bottomless purse... Of course, I wouldn't stick my hand into my purse without gloves on to search for them, so I certainly wouldn't expect you to...

Other than that treatment, we would have been screwed, cause there's nary a juice machine/snack machine to be had at Trinity...

Anyway, thank you for coming on the tour. And adoring our building so much. I think it's pretty cool, but it's even cooler when I get to share it. :)

Oh gosh! Nicole! Sorry to hear about the fall!

J - I think Scott Strumello recently posted about being able to buy these in bulk on the cheap!

I've always heard 5 lifesavers will do the trick...hard part is not eating the whole roll!
