Since I have started using the Continuous Glucose Monitor with my Minimed pump I have found the numbers and graphs fascinating.
Every few days I upload the info on their website and look at trends, how certain meals affect my blood glucose level, and how the insulin I take works. It is very cool stuff.
So now I am trying to do something with all this info. Sure its fun to look at but what good is all this knowledge if nothing is done with it. Seeing that my Humalog kicks in at about 40 minutes after bolusing for me I have started to check and enter my carb count as soon as I can in hopes to curb any spikes in BG.
Well, yesterday I bolused before I left my house for church. I knew I was going to have to run through a fast food joint on my way and then would just eat when I got to church.
On my way to the Golden Arches my cell rings.
“Dude, have you picked up breakfast?” My buddy called wanting to see if I would pick him up some food on the way in to church since he knew I get there early.
“Sure man, no problem.”
I stopped in, got the food and headed off to church.
When I got there my buddy was waiting for me in my office and we sat down to eat. As we were talking and catching up I habitually pulled my machine out of my bag, checked my BG, entered the carb count into my pump, and pressed the button to deliver the dosage.
After the first service is over and before the second service begins, I hold a quick rehearsal for the band to get us ready to lead worship. Just as everyone walked in to the sanctuary to start the rehearsal I started to feel low and then it hit me.
I bolused twice!
I walked back to my office, checked my BG and was at 106. The CGM showed 2 down arrows and a BG of 158 so I knew I was dropping fast. I keep some sort of sugar in my bag all the time and lo and behold I had a full pack of Starburst candies. I had several of those opened and down the hatch in a matter of seconds and took the rest with me into the sanctuary. During the Bible readings I snuck out and checked again. I was 107. I had a few more just to be safe. After church was over I was at 133. Whew!
Another guy at church noticed my mind was somewhere else and asked me after the service what the matter was.
I told him that I had bolused twice on accident.
He said, “Why did you do that?!?”
I almost replied with a "not so nice" remark but instead just shook my head and walked away.

So easy to do! I've done the opposite and totally forgotten to bolus.
