I needed a set change last night. I am not one of the good diabetics that always do their set changes the same time of day. When I run out, I change. Anyhow, last night was one of those times.

My kids wanted to play some Nintendo Wii before they had to take their evening showers so I decided that I would change my set first and then we could play. I switched from my left leg to my right leg. Typically I start at the top of my thigh on the far right and then move my way across my thigh until I have to move down and start over. Sort of an infusion set typewriter.

When I finished the kids already had a game ready to go so I went into the living and proceeded to get my butt kicked by my kids over and over again. While we were playing a little Wii Bowling, my good buddy came by to hang out. He joined in the fun as each of the kids took their turn in the shower until it was bed time.

When the kids went to bed I had this sudden urge for a Chai Tea from my new favorite local coffeehouse. My buddy agreed to go with me and my wife placed her order for a hot chocolate. When we got back we enjoyed our drinks and kept on playing video games until well into the night.

After my friend left and my wife went to sleep I sat down to my desk and heard my pump scream "Beep Boop Beep!" I realized that I had not checked my BG since before the set change. I pricked my finger and watched as my machine sucked up my blood.

"Hi!" said my pump.

"Um, Hi?" that was nice. Gosh I love Medtronic that is just a cool thing to...woah wait. Hi! Oh my goodness. High! My BG is so high my machine cannot tell me what it is! Immediately I stood up and went to the kitchen to wash my hands and test again. It was at this point that I noticed the dry mouth and the dizziness. Its funny how the number or in this case "those letters" bring out the feelings or maybe just heighten the ability to really listen to your body. I went to the bathroom to test for ketones which came back with okay thank goodness.

My second test is 520. I was thankful to see a number so I could actually figure out where the heck I was! I pulled out my site just to be safe and put a new set in. Entered a big fat correction bolus, waited for 20 minutes, and tested again. 446. Ahh, on the way down. I finally went to bed after another hour of testing every 20 minutes watching my BG drop and feeling my brain returning to the earth. I felt awful.

I went to sleep thankful for my pump and my meter but at the same time hating diabetes. Then I was awoken in the middle of the night with a low of 52. Grr!

Did I mention that I hate diabetes?
