Back on November 14th was World Diabetes Day. I really wanted to do something special to mark the day this year. I decided I would write a song and record myself playing it to try and raise some awareness.

On my drive home from work on Thursday the 13th I started humming a tune that I thought would work. I knew I wanted the song to be my personal feelings about my disease and I wanted it to be empowering.

The chorus was easy for me to come up with since I knew I wanted to clarify that we do not choose this disease. It chooses us. I also wanted to talk about the reading and education that must go along with living with this disease. The necessary attention diabetes demands needed to be in there as well as how the never ending struggle is trying. That was just the chorus!

When I picked up my guitar the verses came easy too. I wanted to share my journey from diagnosis and denial, from sorrow to blame, from acceptance and finding strength to not give up.

I poured out a lot of stuff into the words of this song and posted it on You Tube and on Tu Diabetes.

I am so happy that many have said that they felt the way I did. I would love for you to see it.

My hope is always that my experiences and words can provide some comfort to someone else, just in knowing that they are not alone. Every comment I received did exactly that for me.

Anyhow, click on the song title for the link to You Tube and I have provided the lyrics below. I hope you like it.

Not By Choice

When we first met I had no clue
Who you were, what you meant, what you’d do
I tried to run but where to run to
Tried to hide away but you knew.

You’re here with me, but not by choice
Your scream, so loud, without a voice
I learned your name but still don’t understand
Why it never ends.

My bloody hands my tired heart
My spirit broken from the start
I try to blame myself but that’s not right
Maybe I have you cause God knew that I would fight.

You’re here with me, but not by choice
Your scream, so loud, without a voice
I learned your name but still don’t understand
Why it never ends.

Until that day when my time’s through
I fight for life and help others to fight too
‘cause we can’t stop, that is for sure
Until we find ourselves and everyone a cure!

You’re here with me, but not by choice
Your scream, so loud, without a voice
I learned your name but still don’t understand
Why it never ends.
