So as I expected, my doctor told me this morning that the top of my foot is a little infected. I had suspected that a few days ago but then it started looking a little better, a little different. Though it still hurt I kept saying that I fell down the freaking stairs and that's why it still hurt.

Even The Mr. said he didn't think I needed to go to the doctor. But the swelling wasn't getting any better and I wanted to make sure that I was doing for it everything that I needed to do. And wanted to confirm my infection suspicion.

I had to take a stand this morning, and I encourage more people to do this because while doctors are the medical experts we are the experts on our bodies. Based on my history of developing blood clots and the fact that my foot was still swollen a week after the injury Dr. D said she wanted me to have an ultrasound to rule out a blood clot.

I said no. Just flat out said I'm not doing it. All my blood clots have been hormone related. I'm positive that there's no clot. When Dr. D pressed on my leg the only areas that hurt were in the front where there is considerable bruising. If I had a blood clot, I'd have pain on the back side of my leg and behind my knee.

I know what it feels like to have a blood clot, I argued with Dr. D. I know that she just wants to err on the side of caution, but I'm really tired of jumping to get an ultrasound every time my foot gets a little swollen.

In the months and years following the first blood clot I freaked out every time my left foot looked even the slightest bit swollen. There was even a time several years ago when I was having some weird pains and suspected a blood clot and actually did have an ultrasound to rule it out.

So I've come to terms with these weird pains that I get and I understand the concern but I just can't be on edge like that any more. It's like suspecting diabetes is the culprit for every headache you have even when it's not.

So I compromised with Dr. D. I took the order for the ultrasound and agreed to take it easy this weekend and keep my foot elevated. And if Monday or Tuesday comes and I think there is cause for concern, I'll take the order for the ultrasound to the imaging center.

Now, I know you're thinking that I should just go ahead and have the stupid ultrasound to be sure right? But I know my body and I'm positive there is no clot.

Here's to hoping I don't have to eat my words.

Michelle,
have you had your doctor check for diabetic foot ulcers? Your diabetes could have infected a blister or sore and developed into an ulcer. If you want to learn more about preventing feet problems or about risks due to your diabetes, you can visit www.heal2gether.org
