I know this is not a popular view, but I believe I will live a long life and all of it with diabetes. No, I do not believe there will be a cure in my lifetime. Yeah, that’s kind of crappy to say, but I just don’t see enough progress happening (of course I’m really an outsider when it comes to all things cure related) and there is so much money in the treatment of diabetes right now that I think the focus and priorities are not in a place to support a cure.

That’s not to say that I don’t think there will be significant progress on the cure front, I just don’t think I’ll live out my days as a non-diabetic. I believe I’ll be wearing my pancreas on my hip in some shape or another forever. And that’s a long forever, people.

At first I glossed over the news story yesterday about researchers finally mapping the genetic code of lung and skin cancers. I mean I knew it was a really awesome and significant finding for cancer treatment, but I thought that was as far as it went. Just cancer.

Until I heard the story again this morning on the news and I sat up and realized that there must be huge implications for other diseases. Not necessarily directly, but my God! researchers mapped the freaking genetic code of two huge killers! That’s earth shattering! That’s nearly beyond comprehension! Wait! That means it’s possible that that kind of progress is being made on the treatment and cure of diabetes. And maybe that type of mapping can be used to help diabetes researchers. Oh the help that could come from this!

And for one fleeting moment I thought it may be possible for me to live as a former diabetic.
