Sometimes all it takes is a swift kick in the ass.
Late last week I emailed several of my friends who also have diabetes with this problem: I'm spking high and low after nearly every meal. I can't seem to even have a NutriGrain anymore without issues.
They all agreed that my situation sucked. Maybe increase your basals, they suggested. Maybe it's time to switch insulins, they said. Have you stopped exercising, they wondered. Are you, you know, eating right, they questioned.
While my eating habits are not the greatest, I assured them, these crazy spikes were happening even when I was eating by the book. These blood sugar spikes were insane: the line on Dex looked like a capital W.
But since they mentioned it, I remembered that I hadn't really exercised since Thanksgiving and I do notice a definite improvement in my blood sugar when I exercise. However, *not* exercising has never made me spike the way I had been.
I'm a creature of habit and if something works I'm gonna stick to it. I know where I get the best insulin absorption -- lower abdomen, particularly around my belly button (which is exactly where they say not to put your infusion site) -- so that's what I went with. Too close to my backside or even on my thigh turned into a huge disaster.
As I was talking things out with my friends I figured out that I had likely worn out my good sites. Despite rotating sites and finding a place that didn't have an infusion set scar I guess my abdomen still just couldn't handle it any more. It's uncomfortable and I'm hyper aware, but I've moved my sites northward above my waistband.
And with good results. The spikes have disappeared even though I haven't gotten back to walking yet (Monday, it'll happen on Monday).
