I just finished a fast a few days ago. It was one of the single most awesome things that I have ever done. I’ve been reading a very interesting book lately – it talks in length about many things in life – but one thing that I really wanted to try was a fast.
After I started reading this book, and I began to learn a lot about fasting, I decided to do a bit more research for myself online and by asking friends. I got a lot of mixed reviews. Some people were very anti-fast and some people raved about it. So I dug a little deeper and decided this was something that was going to be a very PERSONAL EXPERIENCE and I figured I would try it out for myself (just like you should do if your ever curious about something).
So I decided to do a straight (distilled) water fast. As you probably know there are many different types of fasts, but from what I gathered this sounded like the best one for me at the time. So it started one morning and just continued on. I began drinking the water and experiencing some of the MANY different feelings throughout the process. I began by lowering my Lantus dose (remember, I am a multiple daily injections diabetic – not a pumper) by a few steps. I did not take a single drop of fast acting insulin throughout the entire process. I checked my blood sugar regularly and it never exceeded 150, nor did it ever drop below 59. It was probably the most controlled 2 ¾ days of blood sugars in my life since becoming diabetic. So, that, in and of itself was kick ass!
Some of the other MANY benefits of this experience were the following.
* Much better understanding of how my body works – in MANY ways.
* VERY clear mental clarity throughout the process – some of the clearest moments in my life (thanks to no energy being spent on the food in me).
* Detoxifying my alimentary system (tract from mouth to poop shoot)
* DEEP appreciation for food – smell/aroma of it, abundance of it in my life (fortunate), the different kinds (healthy vs. not healthy).
And the list goes on and on and on (in my opinion and in others).
So the bottom line is, for me, it was wonderful and amazing. For you, the best thing to do if your curious about it is to look into it for yourself (and you may want to converse with your doctor?). But, at the end of the day, it’s your body and you should be the one to know it the best!
One more thing … I did get a low blood sugar a few times. I treated them with a few glucose tablets (you’d be surprised maybe to find out how little it actually takes when your on “E” to get you back up). I believe I got low because I didn’t necessarily abstain from all physical activity (as you may decide too?). So in the end I did have a few things to keep me from passing out…but, what an amazing life experience and one that I would recommend anyone of any age should try. I plan on doing more in the future as well as experiencing a thorough water irrigation of the colon. YUMMY!!!! ;) Stay tuned for ALL THE DETAILS ;)
