I just read about the tragic death of socialite Casey Johnson, daughter of New York Jets owner Woody Johnson and heir to the Johnson & Johnson fortune. She was just 30.

Before the details of her death unfolded, I just thought, how horrible. I knew nothing about Casey Johnson. I wondered why she died. Why the sudden spate of 30-something celebrity deaths. I thought about her father, Woody Johnson, whose football team just made it into the playoffs for the first time in three years. I thought about what must have been a horrendous emotional plummet from great exultation to unthinkable grief.

And then amongst the headlines reporting her death, I saw the word. Diabetes.

And of course I think of Charlie.

When I come across stories like this – stories of young people with diabetes dying, the hair on the back of my neck stands up. I pray I’ll find some sort of footnote to explain why and how this could happen to someone so young. I need to take my son out of the equation.

Tragically, there was that footnote with Casey Johnson. She was very much a party girl and allegedly didn’t take care of herself. She had a long history of problems with drugs and alcohol and as one unnamed source mentioned in a news report, "With her condition, she should have been closely monitoring her health, taking insulin, monitoring blood sugar levels, and she wasn’t."

To think of the resources she had at her disposal. Sure, her billions couldn't buy a cure, but it could buy the best personal diabetes management team, the best personal trainers and the best dietitians in the world. Her father is the chairman of JDRF. Her last name is on the OneTouch blood glucose meter!!!

So tragic.
