Coca cola, you're a jerk.
At the laundromat the other day, I was in sore need of a drink. Bloodsugar of 145 mg/dl. Busy day, running around doing laundry, grabbing groceries.
So I grabbed a can of soda from the vending machine. A can of diet coke.
Sip one
(Internal voice): "Nicole, does this taste a little funky?"
(Nicole): "It's probably just been in the vending machine a little while."
(Internal voice): "It really tastes funky."
Sip two
(Nicole): "Boy, this is really flat tasting. Really heavy tasting."
(Internal voice): "Ya think..."
(Nicole): "This magazine article is awesome. Boy, I didn't know that about high-waisted pants."
Sip three
(Internal voice): "Nevermind the pants, stupid. This soda tastes off."
(Nicole): "But those pants are amazing. And besides that, I'm really thirsty."
(Internal voice): "You're gonna get thirstier with a bloodsugar of 800."
Looking at the can
(Nicole - out loud...): "Aw, man. You've got to be kidding me."
Coca Cola, you are a total freaking jerk. Pretty new cans you're putting your 45 grams of carbohydrate in these days. Looks an awful lot like the cans you put your diet coke in. Too much like those cans, in fact. so much like those cans it's easy for person with diabetes to drink most of a can and not realize it. Especially when there are great high-waisted pants on their mind.
I counted up the carbs and bolused for them, in full, plus 1/2 an extra unit for the 30+ grams of sugar the can contained.
Lesson learned and shared: Be careful of those ridiculous anniversary coke cans. AND listen to your inner voice.

We are going on a wheat-free diet.
Cleaned out all of the (wheat) products.
We are going shopping for new items without gluten (wheat).
Wish us good luck, we are excited.

I have stopped ordering Diet Coke in restaurants. On more than one occasion the waiter/waitress didn't listen and brought me regular coke. Also, I never go to fast food drive-thrus. I go inside so that I can watch them filling my drink order. Again, given regular coke more than once.
FWIW, one of the things I gave up at diagnosis was soda because most of it is made with aspartame (NutraSweet). Aspartame is said to be hard on the kidneys, which may already be impaired (or are first in line to be impaired) by diabetes... not a good idea to consume, IMO. So, except for seltzer (club soda, soda water), I gave it up.
I can always tell the difference because Sprite and 7Up taste very different from seltzer.
YMMV.
